Early childhood experiences are critical to children’s development. We know that the brain rapidly develops in the first six years of life through interactions with their environment, the adults in their lives (including caregivers and teachers), and peers. Consistency is key!
Early learning support helps children understand expectations and build a strong foundation for success in school, and beyond. Establishing a consistent schedule can lead to positive habits, stronger relationships, and trust in their surroundings.
When children are healthy and able, maintaining regular attendance ensures a consistent, positive early learning experience and promotes healthy progress, development, and growth.
Establishes Purposeful Routines
- Young children thrive on routine. Being able to anticipate what comes next and being aware of what their day will look like helps them feel safe and comfortable.
- Ensuring a consistent drop-off and pick-up time during the week can also set children up for success. When children know what to anticipate at drop-off, whether it be independent work, outdoor experiences, or a group gathering, it helps them start their day with a sense of belonging and structure.
- Purposeful routines are strengthened with consistency. Providing children the opportunity to attend school consistently ensures an uninterrupted schedule to grow and develop.
Builds Relationships
- Having a trusting relationship with caregivers and teachers plays a critical role in children’s development. Feeling safe allows them to explore, take risks, and be curious.
- Providing children with a consistent schedule to interact with their teachers and caregivers allows them to build trust and form a strong bond. Much like adults, it can be disruptive to a relationship when time apart is sudden or inconsistent.
- Social-emotional skills are just as important as academic skills. The early learning environment of their Montessori classroom provides ample opportunities for children to engage with their peers, solve problems, and communicate.
- It’s important for teachers and caregivers to spend consistent time with children to understand their needs and interests. In doing so, they can create richer learning experiences that keep children engaged.
Creates Positive Habits
- Attendance and punctuality are both skills that are critical in school and in life. Creating a sense of routine and responsibility early on can set children up for future success.
- Routines and habits form early. Children who are chronically absent in preschool are far more likely to be chronically absent in later grades.
Children and families will both benefit by maintaining a consistent schedule. Doing so supports healthy routines, understanding of expectations, and the overall development of children during some of their most impactful years. Plus, we love sharing our days with you!
